Day 27: Gordan River cruise then to Zeehan

This was another special day that included one of our “big rocks” (and expenses) of the journey. David really wanted to do this famous cruise on Macquarie Harbour and up the Gordan River, so we did. It was stunning, and included lunch too (good thing, as it was a seven-hour cruise).

Bakers Oven on Sarah Island, over 200 years old

Last year both of us read a book that was set partly in this place: The Ship that Never Was. It was amazing to see the area in person. The cruise also provide informative commentary as we went along. We got to walk on Sarah Island and hear some of its convict and ship building history from a very entertaining guide. We also stopped along the river and walked into the rainforest. It was a well put together package, but I was tired by the end.

After we got off the boat we drove north to Zeehan where the next day we planned to see a large museum about the west coast of Tasmania.

This guide was a great story teller, here he's telling us about this solitary confinement prison (built for an extra layer of punishment for prisoners who were misbehaving).

Huon Pine, an amazing and quite rare timber that drew many to
this area of the world. One of it's amazing qualities is
that it doesn't rot under water, so it's
obviously valued for shipbuilding!

Walk in the rainforest

Gordan River. No one lives along it, so it's an amazing sight.
It's a national park, but also a World Heritage Conservation Area.

This is where we parked that night: ZGC (Zeehan Golf Club). 
We paid $5 to use their shower, but largely stayed in
the motorhome as it was so muddy.
